Harpenden Wrap-Around Extension
This semi-detached family home in Harpenden was in need of modernisation. While its footprint was already substantial, the ground floor layout was awkward, with a disproportionate amount of floorspace given over to a double length garage and the only garden access being through an existing conservatory. A downstairs WC located right by the front door made for a cramped entrance lobby while a large central hallway space was very much underused.
Our client’s brief was to improve connections between principal living spaces and the garden. We were tasked with creating a spacious open plan kitchen/dining/family room to serve as a family hub, incorporating a separate utility room, finding space for a new playroom and a secondary shower room as well as improving the entry sequence and flow of natural light through the house.
Existing attached garage and conservatory demolished to make way for new single storey wrap-around extension
Downstairs WC relocated to create generous, bright and inviting entrance hallway with double glazed doors into separate living room to front
New downstairs shower room incorporated in central location
Spacious, light filled L-shaped open plan kitchen/ dining/family room created to rear with corner bi-folding doors opening onto new patio
Separate utility room created within old garage space, accessed from the new kitchen with vaulted ceiling and rooflights over
Front of garage retained for storage space
“Ros was approachable, friendly and patient in listening to our needs and ideas. Achieving the indoor-outdoor living experience we aspired to was really important to us, and the dining space Ros has created with corner bi-folding doors really feels part of the garden on a sunny day!”
